{"id":191341,"date":"2025-04-08T11:22:52","date_gmt":"2025-04-08T09:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.asd-int.com\/?post_type=mini_blog&#038;p=191341"},"modified":"2025-04-08T11:24:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T09:24:10","slug":"european-union-the-response-to-us-customs-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"mini_blog","link":"https:\/\/www.asd-int.com\/en\/european-union-the-response-to-us-customs-tariffs\/","title":{"rendered":"European Union: the response to US customs tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In response to US President Donald Trump&#8217;s signature of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asd-int.com\/en\/united-states-increase-in-tariffs-on-steel-and-aluminium\/\">two executive orders amending the US tariffs on steel and aluminium<\/a>, which came into force on 12 March 2025, <strong>the European Union has decided to retaliate<\/strong> by adopting proportional countermeasures.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How will the European Union respond?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The European Union is planning to introduce measures to protect its trade interests against the United States, in turn <strong>increasing customs duties<\/strong> on a host of American products.<\/p>\n\n<p>Currently being finalised, <strong>these countermeasures will be based on those adopted in May 2018<\/strong>, already in response to an initial imposition of additional duties on steel, aluminium and certain derivatives imposed by the United States.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Anticipate the consequences!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>This response is likely to heighten tensions between the United States and the European Union, <strong>making trade between the two parties even more complex.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New implications for exporters and manufacturers:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Higher import costs<\/strong>, with a risk of this being passed on to final selling prices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More complex supply chains<\/strong>, particularly in the construction, automotive and infrastructure sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tighter customs controls and increased regulatory<\/strong> compliance requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can we prepare for these changes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Companies exporting to the United States must now :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Analyse the potential impact on their <strong>supply chain<\/strong> and <strong>production costs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider <strong>alternative solutions<\/strong>: partial relocation, adjustment of processes, diversification of supply sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ASD Group supports you<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>ASD Group offers you tailor-made support to make your procedures in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asd-int.com\/en\/our-services-in-the-united-states\/\">the United States easier<\/a>.
