Indonesia: a new visa for “digital nomads”

Reading time: 4 minutes

Indonesia and connected mobility

Indonesia is an island state located in Southeast Asia. In 2019, specialists estimated the Indonesian population to number around 270 million people, making it the fourth most populous country in the world.

Its main religion is Islam. It is actually one of the first Muslim countries in the world. Indonesia offers a great cultural and religious diversity, which makes it truly open to the world.

Jakarta, the current capital of the country (until 2024) is a megalopolis with a booming economy. For many years, new foreign investors have been settling in this city but also in the surrounding area. In Indonesia, everything is still possible!

This country, rich in natural resources – rice, tin, gas deposit – has an enormous potential in renewable energy. But that is not all… Indeed, it displays unique traditional craftsmanship. You can also find many factories specialising in decoration, textiles, electronics… Most of these industries are located on the island of Java, not far from the island of Bali.

With over 13,000 islands, this country is attracting more and more foreign investors from Asia or the West in search of new playgrounds (such as Bali, one of the most famous islands in southern Asia) and investments in industry, new technologies, the medical sector or tourism.

More and more people want to come and settle in Asia, for its dynamism, its exoticism, its culture, its openness to the world and all the opportunities that this country offers.

During the pandemic, many people went to settle in South Asia in countries such as Thailand for example and more particularly in Indonesia. Covid-19 has changed working methods and habits. These upheavals have pushed some French nationals or those from other countries to become nomads. Digitization has tremendously changed the operational organization of companies. Since the start of the pandemic, it has been observed that more and more employees want to favor teleworking and the flexibility it provides.

A number of them have decided to go ahead and become “digital nomads”.

What is digital nomadism?

The “digital nomad” is a person who, because of his functions, is able to work remotely thanks to 3 essential tools: his mobile phone, his laptop and a good internet and wifi connection.

The characteristics of the digital worker lie in the fact that:

  • he can work wherever he wishes,
  • he can easily travel around the world,
  • he can reside in the country of his choice.

The digital nomad can be an entrepreneur, a self-entrepreneur, a freelancer, a self-employed worker or even an employee! Absolutely! In this case, it is nomadic employees working “remotely”.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the majority of companies have had to review their work organisation. They had to adapt and put in place new ways of working and new logistics to protect their employees and sustain their professional activity.

Following the Covid-19 health crisis, many companies allow their employees to work from home, sometimes even giving them permission to live abroad for a few months.

The following professions and trades can be considered nomadic: translators, web writers, web developers, graphic designers, marketers, bloggers, online trainers, distance coaches, e-commerce entrepreneurs, dropshippers…

Why work from Indonesia?

The Asian continent very quickly joined the phenomenon of co-working, thus allowing large and medium-sized companies to position intra-Asian offices at reduced costs and to offer their employees or expatriates forms of remote work and different environments.

Indonesian big cities have quickly adapted and offer excellent infrastructure to help increase productivity and develop a business network very quickly.

This new organization has made it possible to highlight a certain number of entrepreneurs endowed with talents from all walks of life. They were able to drive the exponential growth of their startups and thus create inspiring universes.

From this synergy were born several incubators in different cities between Jakarta, Meydan and Bali, thus generating very interesting job and growth opportunities in this developing country.

It is in this context that the French school “le Wagon”, with 43 campuses in 27 countries and the first planetary network in the coding professions, has settled on the island of Bali and offers its intensive courses to students or people changing career. The latter can taste a different way of life abroad while learning the digital professions.

Indonesia proposes a new visa for digital nomads

What is the new visa for digital nomads?

The Indonesian authorities wish to increase the number of tourists but above all to attract families or applicants wishing to settle and stay in Indonesia long term and work there differently. In recent years, many “digital nomads” have settled there for the gentle lifestyle, the possibility of creating new businesses, the opportunities and the ability to travel to certain surrounding countries (Australia, Singapore, Japan…). However, they did not hold a specific visa related to their nomadic lifestyle.

For this reason, the Indonesian government wishes to facilitate the obtension of a residence visa with a validity period of 5 years for “digital nomads” but under certain conditions.

What is the visa for digital nomads?

  • Visa with a stay duration of 5 years valid on the entire territory of Indonesia,
  • Obligation to live in Indonesia at least 183 days/year,
  • Tax exemption for 5 years (the professional activity must generate foreign income and must not be located in Indonesia).
