From 1 September 2026, wood packaging used for imports into the European Union must be systematically declared in TRACES when creating the CHED.

A new SIVEP directive, received on 21 July 2026, introduces new requirements concerning wood packaging associated with goods imported into the European Union.

This obligation concerns any raw wood packaging thicker than 6 mm, regardless of the type of goods imported.

Which wood packaging is concerned?

The following are particularly concerned:

  • Wooden pallets
  • Dunnage
  • Closed crates transporting animals
  • Corners and wedges in raw wood thicker than 6 mm
  • More generally, any raw wood packaging falling within the scope of the regulations

What information must be declared in TRACES?

For each consignment concerned, the following information must be transmitted to the TRACES service:

Country of dispatchCountry of dispatch of the wood packaging

Establishments must also be registered in TRACES

In order to allow the declaration of wood packaging, the establishment of origin of the goods as well as the final destination must be registered in TRACES. These establishments must be registered in the category:

Establishment to registerCategory in TRACESRequired status
Establishment of origin of the goodsPlant HealthProfessional Operators referred to in Article 45(1)(l) IMSOCValid
Final destinationPlant HealthProfessional Operators referred to in Article 45(1)(l) IMSOCValid

A point of attention during loading

In order to facilitate checks carried out by the competent authorities, the loading must be organised so that the marking of the wood packaging is immediately visible upon opening the vehicle.

This provision will notably enable the authorities to more easily verify the compliance of the packaging during checks.

An obligation applicable from 1 September 2026

This new procedure becomes mandatory from 1 September 2026.

⚠️ Warning
The absence of the required information or non-compliance of the packaging may result in the refusal of consignments by the competent authorities.
