Brexit – New deadlines for British sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) requirements

Since leaving the European Union, the United Kingdom is implementing sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) formalities and obligations at its borders. The schedule for British SPS requirements has been updated.  As of October 1st, 2021, the formalities will be as follows: 

  • Requirement for drivers to have a passport.
  • Pre-notification and submission of sanitary documents for products of animal origin, all plants and regulated plant products.
  • Abolition of the temporary derogation on pallets and packages.

On another hand, as of January 1st, 2021, all import/export formalities will be required: 

  • Registration of customs and transit declarations with the GVMS (“Goods Vehicle Movement Service”).
  • Full safety and security declarations.
  • Increased physical controls and sampling at the border for SPS products.

Finally, the border control for some SPS goods will be reinstated as of March 1st, 2021.
