EU customs reform 2028: new realities for e-commerce

Reading time: < 1 minute

From 2028, marketplaces and e-commerce platforms will assume greater responsibility for the products they distribute within the European Union.

Increased responsibility of marketplaces and e-commerce platforms

Marketplaces and e-commerce platforms will become official importers of the products they make available on the European market. This means :

  • Complete handling of customs obligations relating to imports.
  • Guaranteed payment of duties and taxes during the import process.
  • Product compliance with environmental, safety and ethical standards.

Duty-free for parcels under €150

Duty-free treatment for parcels worth less than €150 will be abolished. As a result, customs duty will now apply, regardless of the value of the goods imported.

However, to facilitate procedures, low-value goods will be grouped into four categories, replacing the current system of thousands of separate categories.
